I’ve refreshed my home server farm.
NAS refresh
I’ve replaces existing nas chassis worked almost 10 years to new chasis. Old HDD had been still working alive but experienced excessive raw read error and seek error. Here is SMART attributes of old HDD.

Thanks to my ZFS, I’ve kept all of my data healthy despite of massive error rate. And I’ve moved all of my data to new HDD and chassis.
Here is my old NAS box. This is HP Microserver gen 1 wokred with NAS4Free for almost 10 years. I had experienced no failure on the box and hdd itself. Also it achives about 50W power consumption. This is amazing result.
I’ve replaced old Seagate ST8000AS0002 archive HDD to Western Digital WD82PURZ. This two types of HDD has almost same size, 8TB. I continue to use NAS4Free and ZFS, but add more memory to work cache more efficiently. Here is spec.

Due to change HDD’s rotation speed from 5,400 to 7,200, my experience is highly improved.
My home farm gets fat over last 5 years and heavily depends on kvm virtualization. Here is diagram. There is too many physical boxes. I tried to consolidate some box and seeks alternative solution for reduction of power consumption.
I think that using Raspberry Pi for general purpose computing such as network router, mail server, dns server, and so on is nice idea. I’ve moved router, mail server into Raspberry Pi.
Also consolidated encode server with one of desktop. Written above, I’ve retired old nas box and moved into kvm box. Here is my current configuration diagram.
As a result, I’ve wiped 1 phisycal box, 1 physical box replaced with RPi box, and all of virtualized (and complex) environment. Along with these effort, I’ve achived about 25% energy efficiency improvement.
Old config estimated power consumption: 600W
Current config estimated power consumption: 450W
